]]> Libyan rebel leader Khalifa Haftar says he’ll attend this weekend’s peace conference in Berlin with the leader of the Government of National Accord Fayez Al Sarraj.
He’s been persuaded by Germany’s Foreign Minister Heiko Maas to return the process he walked out of last weekend.
Khalifa Haftar was speaking in Athens where he is seeing Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Greece has become more involved in Libya’s peace process since Turkey signed a military and maritime cooperation agreement with the Government of National Accord.
The deal gives exploration rights to Turkey in vast swathes of the Mediterranean that are disputed by Greece.
World powers are pressing the Libyan parties to sign an agreement in Berlin that will end nine years of conflict following ousting and death of Muammar Gadaffi.

]]> Two acts of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea have underlined that the area off Africa’s west coast is the most dangerous shipping lane on the planet.

A Greek oil tanker off Togo and a Norwegian bulk carrier are the latest targets of the buccaneers.

Four crew members had been kidnapped from the Greek tanker attacked off Togo. A security guard was shot and injured. 

Nine sailors  were abducted from the Norwegian bulk carrier off Benin.

Figures from the  International Maritime Bureau indicate these bring to 75 the number  seafarers seized this past year by pirates seeking ransom payments from the ship owners.

Millions of dollars have been paid by companies considering whether to send vessels into the Gulf of Guinea.

]]> The UN immigration agency’s reporting a significant drop in the number of migrants crossing the Mediterranean to Europe from Africa.

There were 25 338 migrants that made this journey in the first 19 weeks of this year.

628 died attempting it.

Italy,  with 41% of the traffic, once again took in the lion’s share of African migrants.

This was followed by Greece with 38%, leaving Spain with 21%. 

This year’s number is less than half the number who landed in the same period last last and about 13% of the number of migrants in 2016.

The International Organisation For Migration says the largest number of migrants coming to Europe from North Africa are Tunisians, followed by Eritreans, Nigerians, Sudanese, Pakistanis, Malians, Guineans and Senegalese.

]]> European foreign ministers have devised a ten-point plan to deal with the growing number of migrants leaving the North African coast and making all too often fatal attempts to cross the Mediterranean.

Observers say it marks an appreciation by the grouping that this is a Europe-wide problem that cannot be left only to Italy and Greece.

The plan thrashed out by ministers meeting in Luxembourg is aimed squarely at the people traffickers profiting from the desperate migrants by cramming them into unseaworthy vessels headed for the closest European destination.

It also commits greater resources to preventing the departures and rescuing those in peril on the sea.

Italy yesterday arrested the captain and first mate of a vessel that sank off the Libyan coast at the weekend, leaving at least 700 people dead.
