Rampaging crowds stoned motor cars and burned tyres.

Lungu’s been at the centre of a power struggle that preceded President Michael Sata’s death.

He calls his sacking illegal and accuses Scott of insulting Zambian culture while the nation’s mourning Sata.

Crowds supporting Lungu, who was acting president when Sata went to Britain for medical treatment last month, are massing for further riots in Lusaka tonight.

The Zambian Watchdog reports government sources saying the 5am Cabinet meeting in Lusaka was aimed at formalising the power transfer to vice-president Guy Scott after the death in London last night of President Michael Sata.

This will entail acting president Edgar Lungu to handover power to Scott and the Cabinet formulating an official statement of the president’s passing.

It isn’t yet clear if Lungu will agree to the handover.

He may argue that he was put in charge when Sata went to London for medical treatment ten days ago.

Lungu and some ministers had a meeting around midnight when they heard the news of the president’s death.
