Amnesty International’s urging President Cyril Ramaphosa to the full and honest stock of human rights in South Africa in his state of the nation speech tomorrow.

The human rights watchdog says the days of making promises that don’t translate into better lives for people are over.

Calling for a turning points in South Africa’s human rights, Amnesty International country director Shenilla Mohamed says the literacy level is decreasing with more children unable to read and write in their mother tongues.

Healthcare is failing with only seven percent of healthcare facilities offering the safe and legal abortions that the law provides for.

After seven years, the families of the 34 people who died in the Marikana massacre are still waiting for justice.

Despite continued anger about corruption and economic woes, South Africans are the most optimistic among three of the continent’s leading economies polled.

Most believe inequality has become worse and their countries are run for the benefit of a few groups of people.

ends intro

The Washington based Pew group, which calls itself a fact tank, researched 3 330 respondents in South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya.

In all three countries, those polled  believe  healthcare and education will be better for the next generation.

More than three-quarters also say that young people who want a good life should stay in their countries rather than emigrate.

Respondents report high levels of political engagement.

Most say ordinary citizens can influence their governments if they make the effort.

More than half say they had voted in the past year  – roughly the same level as in the US.
