Fighting across the volatile border between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda has left at least five Congolese soldiers dead.

Kinshasa officials say it started when Rwanda troops crossed the border and abducted a Congolese soldier.

Western officials are seeking play down the rhetoric on the banks of Lake Kivu as Rwanda and DRC accuse each other of crossing their border and committing acts of aggression.

Rwandan foreign minister Louise Mushikiwabo says her country stands ready to protect its citizens against further attacks.

Her officials say Congolese troops have come into Rwanda and killed four people this week.

Renewed tensions between the two neighbours are undermining international efforts to bring stability to Congo’s mineral-rich, lawless east and the wider region after years of conflict.

Commander of UN peacekeepers in Congo General Carlos Alberto dos Santos Cruz says the world organisation’s investigating the clashes.
