Explosions and gunfire can be heard from a university dormitory in the north eastern Kenyan town of Garissa.

Police and defence forces stormed in after the attack by masked gunmen in the early hours as morning prayers began at the college mosque..

Al Shabab is believed to be responsible for the attack.

There’s no indication of fatalities although local media’s reporting two policemen and a student have been injured.

A pall of smoke hangs over the dormitory and students could be seen running from the building in their pyjamas.

There are unconfirmed reports of students being taken hostage.

The area has come under frequent attack from Al Shabab avenging Kenya’s involvement in the multinational force supporting the government in Somalia.

Eleven seamen held by Somali pirates for more than four years are now free.

This follows the release of three Kenyan aid workers held hostage for more than two years in Somalia.

The sailors from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Iran are on their way home.

Four off their crewmates drowned when their Malaysian-owned cargo ship was seized in 2010.

Twelve were released during negotiations in 2012.

There are reports the last 11 sneaked out of a window while their release was being mediated.

It is understood no ransom was paid for them.

The aid workers who were abducted in 2012 have been freed unharmed.

They are safely back home in Kenya.
