The Israeli government’s plan to forcibly evict African asylum seekers has collapsed.

Authorities have told the High Court they will stop holding deportation hearings and and previous expulsion decisions have now been nullified.

In an embarrassing climbdown, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu admits that his plan to relocate African asylum seekers has fallen through and there’s currently no possibility of forcibly detaining them.

Detention centres established for asylum seekers – mainly from Eritrea and Sudan – will be reopened.

Visas, renewable after 60 days,  will be issued to migrants currently being held.

This is a victory for the coalition of human rights groups that petitioned the High Court last month to demand that those who face deportation be allowed to see the agreements Israel allegedly signed with Rwanda or Uganda, the countries to which it planned to deport them.

Both African nations deny the existence of such deals.

Kenya’s Supreme Court will rule today whether tomorrow’s re-run can take place in election.

Human Rights groups have brought the 11th-hour legal action fearing violence if the one-sided contest takes place.

Kenya’s government’s already declared today and tomorrow public holidays in order to allow voters to cast their ballots.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, who won the August election which was overturned by the Supreme Court, is adamant tomorrow’s re-run should take place.

But human rights groups say there should be a delay to allow the Independent Electoral Commission more time to organize the poll.

They fear violence from supporters of opposition leader Raila Odinga who has withdrawn as a candidate.

The post-election violence after the 2007, which cost at least 1500 lives hangs over the court decision today.
