South Africa’s effectively backed President Nicholas Maduro’s rule in Venezuela, calling on the United Nations  to respect  the sovereignty to that troubled South American country.

Speaking in the United Nations Security Council, Ambassador Jerry Matjila asserts that the situation in Venezuela does not constitute a threat to international peace and security.

The 15-member  United Nations Security Council is meeting on Venezuela at the request of the United States.

It wants the UN powerhouse to vote this week on its draft proposal calling for elections in Venezuela and compelling the regime of Nicholas Maduro to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid.

Russia is at loggerheads with the US which it accuses of preparing for military intervention in Venezuela.

As a non permanent member of the council, South Africa’s position is that the council should net even be considering the Venezuela situation because it does not pose a threat to world peace.

South Africa welcomes the decision of the International Court of Justice ordering  the United States of America to ensure that sanctions against Iran don’t affect humanitarian aid and civil aviation safety.

The statement from the Department of International Relations and Cooperation calls on parties to the Iran nuclear deal to honour their commitment to that agreement.

The  ICJ has ordered the United States to remove any impediments to the free exportation to Iran of goods required for humanitarian assistance, as well as goods and services required for the safety of civil aviation.

This followed the re-imposition of sanctions on Iran by the Trump administration.

South Africa reiterates its belief that the deal between the permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany and Iran, is a major achievement for multilateral diplomacy and the peaceful resolution of conflict.
