]]> A deadly stampede at Malawi’s national stadium has killed eight people, mostly children.

Forty people were injured in rush that occurred as Malawians celebrated their independence day celebration yesterday.

The disaster happened at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe ahead of a soccer match between two local teams.

The dead include children between five and 12 years old.

The Daily Times reports that the stampede happened when police used tear gas to disperse a crowd pushing into the stadium when a gate was being opened.

Most of the injured were under 10 years old.

They’d  been looking forward to the soccer match, which was to be free for spectators.
