The Khartoum governments suspended peace talks with rebel groups in its troubled western region and is sending more troops to West Darfur.

When separatist violence began in Darfur 15 years, the region was called the worst humanitarian crisis on the planet.

Former President Omar Al Bashir is still wanted by the International Criminal Court for genocide committed by his militia – feared Janjawiid – that is still active there.

The fresh violence shows the fragility of peace efforts, particularly in West Darfur.

Some of the victims were burned to death and there are children among the fatalities.

The United Nations says 300 000 people were killed and nearly three million displaced in the crackdown that began in 2003.

The probe was announced by state prosecutor Tagelsir Al Heber.

He says Omar Al Bashir and his intelligence hear Saleh Gosh will be investigated.

He did not mention former Janjawiid commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemetti, who is part of the transitional authority now running the country.

Al Heber says some of the investigation might be outside Sudan.

This could mean handing Al Bashir to the International Criminal Court which has indicted him for genocide and crimes against humanity in Darfur.

The Sudan Professionals Council is claiming this as a victory and vows to continue mass street protests until a civilian government is installed.

Awad Ibn Auf has been replaced by Abdel Fattah Abdelrahman Burhan as head of the military council that will remain in power for two years until elections in Sudan.

He says he’s stepping aside to maintain the unity of the armed forces.

Ibn Auf is on a United States sanctions list, having been head of military intelligence during the Darfur conflict in the early 2000s for which deposed president Omar Al Bashir has been indicted for war crimes by the International Criminal Court.

The Sudanese Professional Association, which has organized months of mass protests calling for Al Bashir’s fall has distanced itself from this say, saying it will only accept a civilian transitional administration.

There’s no word of the whereabouts of President Omar Al Bashir.

Security authorities will be at pains to keep him out of the clutches of the International Criminal Court where he has been indicted for war crimes in Darfur.

Saudi Arabia and Egypt have both offered him asylum.

There have been clashes between soldiers trying to protect the predominantly female protestors and others trying to disperse them.

As demonstrations in Khartoum and its twin city Omdurman, now in their fifth month, gain momentum, there are indications from the presidency Omar Al Bashir wants to talk to dissidents in a bid to build national consensus.

However there are ominous signs of a tougher line with the growing presence of the janjaweed stopping supplies reaching protestors.

The shadowy militia is responsible for atrocities in the Sudanese territory of Darfur for which Al Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court.

Gbagbo has had to agree to limit his movement and to being surveillance in Belgium.

The first former head of state to appear in the dock at the International Criminal Court, Laurent Gbagbo was acquitted last month on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The charges relate to the civil war that ensued in the Ivory Coast following Gbagbo’s refusal to accept defeat in a 2010 election.

The international tribunal continues to hold him pending the appeal on his acquittal.

Belgium’s agreed that he can stay there, with strict limitations on his movements,  because his second wife lives in Brussels.

He was speaking after the country’s Constitutional Court upheld the electoral commission’s rejection of his candidacy in that election.

Jean-Pierre Bemba is one of six hopefuls rejected as presidential candidates by the DRC’s electoral commission.

The former vice president says the commission is ensuring victory for President Joseph Kabila’s successor Ramazani Shadary.

Bemba, who was vice president for three years from 2003, ran second to Kabila in the 2006 election.

His 2016 conviction for war crimes and crimes against humanity was overturned by the International Criminal Court last June.

However his conviction for bribing witnesses – which is the reason for his disqualification as candidate – still stands

Presidential elections in Libya next year is still on the United Nations wish list.

Released last June from six years in detention, Saif al Islam Gadaffi wants to be part of it.

His spokesman says Muammar Gadaffi’s second son will be a strong candidate because he has the support of the major tribes in Libya.

He’s calling for United Nations to help Libya transition from a compromise government to stability and order.

It’s unclear how the world organization will respond to this call from a man wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity allegedly committed while trying to keep his father in power.

He believes the international tribunal advocates for good governance and does valuable work in countering impunity.

There were raucous celebrations when Jammeh surprisingly  conceded  defeat after polling  36,7% of the vote in last Thursday poll to Barrow’s 45,5%

The streets of the capital Banjul are now much calmer.

Barrow has been greeted with cheers, hugs and a local prayer singer.

He says his two wives, five children and mother will join him in Gambia’s State House when he moves in next month.

Bosco Ntaganda refused to appear in the dock at the International Criminal in protest against the terms of his detention.

Bosch Ntaganda handed himself in to the US embassy in neighboring Rwanda three years ago with authorities hunting him down for excesses perpetrated by his Patriotic Front for the Liberation of Congo 14 years ago.

He stopped eating because he claimed he was not getting a fair trial and was not getting access to his family.

His lawyer says he’ll see his family tomorrow.

The court had ruled that his trial would have to continue in his absence.

Prosecutors say Ntaganda played a central role in the ethnic Ituri conflict in the far northeast which left some 60 000 dead.
