A Greek-owned tanker carrying gas oil is believed to have been pirated off the coast of Ghana.

The International Maritime Bureau says last contact with the vessel was on Wednesday.

The IMB, that monitors piracy around the globe, characterises the Gulf of Guinea as a danger area.

It says there’s been a posible hijacking of the MV Fair Artemis, flying the Liberian flag, that’s gone missing with 24 crew aboard.

The ship lost contact with its Greek owners off Accra on Thursday.

As a result of patrols by Nato and other forces, piracy off the African coast has largely moved from the Horn on the east coast to the Gulf of Guinea in the West.

Because of activities by the Ghanaian navy piracy off that coast was limited to one incident last year.
