At least 43 migrants have drowned off the coast of Djibouti on the Horn of Africa.

The International Oganisation for Migration fears the death toll from the sinking of two crowded boats could be high higher.

Djibouti has become a major launch site for migrants, mainly from Ethiopia, heading for the Arabian peninsula.

Crossing the Red Sea is less considered hazardous than braving the Mediterranean which claimed six lives a day in 2018, according to a United Nations report.

This figure takes in launchings from Libya in the east and Morocco in the west.

Yesterday’s tragedy underlines the harsh reality that vast numbers of people are prepared to risk their lives and those of their families seeking economically more prosperous  and politically more peaceful futures away from Africa.

The UN says people smugglers have deliberately drowned up to 50 migrants – mostly teenagers – from Somalia and Ethiopia off the coast of Yemen.

About a third of those forced into the sea, when the smugglers thought they saw authority figures on the beach, were women.

The news comes from the International Organization for Migration which calls the drownings shocking and inhumane.

UN staffers found the shallow graves of 29 of the migrants on a beach in Shabwa during a routine patrol.

The dead were buried by those who survived.

At least 22 migrants are still missing.

The passengers’ average age was around 16.

The narrow waters between the Horn of Africa and Yemen have been a popular migration route despite Yemen’s ongoing conflict. Migrants try to make their way to the oil-rich Gulf countries.
