The man’s death today from a bullet in the head comes on the eve of a regional summit in Dar es Salaam on the crisis in the Great Lakes country.

The demonstrations in Burundi have been marked by the increased participation of women defying President Pierre Nkurunziza’s ban on protests.

The body of the victim was carried to the home of the district’s mayor, demanding he organise the funeral.

Nkurunziza has come under intense international pressure to withdraw from next month’s election and stand down.

East African leaders are to hold an emergency meeting in Tanzania tomorrow to discuss the crisis. Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will attend.

More than 50 000 Burundians have fled into neighbouring countries since the unrest began two weeks ago.
