The leaders of Russia and Turkey call for a ceasefire in Libya.

Meeting in Istanbul, Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for ceasefire to come into effect at midnight on Sunday.

The Turkish and Russian presidents were attending  the inauguration of the Turkestream pipeline carrying Russian gas through Turkey to Europe.

The 920 km pipeline that crosses the Black Sea is part of Russia’s efforts to avoid using  Ukraine to export its gas.

Turkey and Russia support opposite sides in the Libya conflict.

Vladimir Putin backs the rebel leader Khalifa Haftar whose forces have taken the strategic coastal town of Sirte and have set their sights on Tripoli.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan is deploying troops to support the United-Nations-backed Government of National Accord in the capital.

The Washington Post has dismissed what it calls the sham trial of its dissident Saudia Arabian columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

Five men have been sentenced to death by the Saudi Crown Court  and three to long terms of imprisonment.

The Saudi authorities have not identified the men sentenced to death or imprisonment for the grissly killing of Jamal Khashoggi in the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul 14 months ago.

Washington Post publisher Fred Ryan says those ultimately responsible for this killing are at the highest level of Saudi Arabian political life and continue to escape responsibility.

United States intelligence sources point the finger at the de facto ruler of the Kingdom, Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman who accepts responsibility but denies involvement in the killing

The Saudi Crown Court has sentenced five people to death for the killing of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi

Three others have been jailed for what Saudi authorities insists was a rogue operation.

The killing, dismemberment and disposal of Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October last year is the grissly stuff of horror movies.

It has done irreparable damage to the reputation of Saudi Arabia. Certainly as much harm as the 9/11 attacks on Manhattan and Washington by Saudi-trained terrorists.

Many major newspapers and analysts say it could never have happened without approval from the very top.

That’s de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

His closest advisor Saud al-Qahtani was investigated but not charged.

Hundreds of Tunisians have protested against the visit of Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman.

It’s raised questions about how the de facto ruler of the kingdom will be received at the G20 summit in Argentina this weekend.

Tunisian protestors displayed  posters showing Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed Bin Salman wielding a chain saw.

It’s a reference to the dismemberment of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi after he was killed in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul six weeks ago.

They also depicted Tunsian President Beji Caid Essebsi pouring cleansing water on the blood-stained hands of the prince, who is said to have ordered the killing.

The Tunsians demonstrations shocked the Saudi authorities. On his first foreign trip since the killing of Khashoggi, the prince was well received in Bahrain, the United Arab Emirate and Egypt.

A Bill that would allow child rapists to walk free if they marry their victims has brought thousands on the streets in Turkey.

Protestors says its a charter for pedophiles, although the authorities maintain its designed to help legal challenges caused by widespread child marriage in the poorer rural parts of the country.

ends intro

Protestors are demanding the Bill be torn up.

A least three thousand people gathered in central Istanbul and large numbers were evident in Ankara, Izmir and Trabzon.

They’re saying the Bill proposed by the ruling  Justice and Development Party (AKP) legitimises  rape.

If it becomes law, men who sexually abused girls under 18 without force, threat or any restriction on consent over the past 11 years  and marry them could have their convictions quashed or avoid prosecution.
