Fourteen years after withdrawing from the International Criminal Court, the United States has expressed regret that Russia has made exactly the same decision.

Both Russia and the US signed the Rome Statute of 1998 giving birth to the ICC, Niether have ratified that treaty, and now both have pointedly rejected the tribunal’s authority.

Russia’s decision to leave the ICC altogether is widely seen as the latest step in a trend that may

threaten the future of world justice.

This after Burundi, South Africa and Gambia gave notice of quitting the court.

US State Department spokesman John Kirby says even though Washington doesn’t recognize the ICC’s authority over its personnel, it does not diminish US belief that the court does provide a valuable framework.

He says Washington supports ICC prosecution of those cases that advance US interests.

The Pentagon says the ringleader in the 2012 attack on Washington’s diplomatic mission in Benghazi has been captured.

Ahmed Abu Khattala was grabbed by US special forces operating inside Libya.

The September 2012 attack on the US consulate in Libya’s second city left four Americans dead, including Ambassador Chris Stevens.

The ringleader of that operation is now being held outside the US, says the Pentagon, adding that special forces involved in the operation capturing him have all safely left Libya.

Spokesman Rear Admiral John Kirby is not giving details beyond saying there were no Libyan civilian casualties.

Ahmed Abu Khattala spent years in jail under dictator Muammar Gadaffi.

He denies any links with Terror group Al Qaeda, although he’s expressed admiration for it.
