Former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has been appointed to the group of former leaders established by the late President Nelson Mandela and known as the Elders.

The Nobel Peace Prize Laureate was the first elected African woman president.

Nelson Mandela said the Elders would bring courage where there is fear; agreement where there is conflict;  and hope where there is despair.

Former Irish President Mary Robinson, who currently heads the group, says Ellen Johnson Sirleaf will adequately fulfill this role.

Robinson, a former UN human rights chief,  also announced the elevation of Jordanian diplomat Zain Raad al Hussein, who was a successor in the UN job, and former Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos – another Nobel Peace Price laureate – to the elders.

Israeli pilots have refused to fly asylum seekers deported by the Tel Aviv Government to African countries.

Their action follows Germn pilots last year refusing to take deportees to Afghanistan and countries they deem unsafe.

The El Al pilots made their feelings known on their FaceBook sites.

Their action is largely symbolic.

The Israeli Government does not use the national carrier to move deportees.

In terms of legislation passed to expel thousands of them, they are taken to Rwanda and Uganda which have been paid to accept them.

They are flown on other carriers via Jordan or Ethiopia.

The Israeli NGO Zimzim Community Action is pressing  pilots to follow the example of German fliers who refused 222 flights last year carrying deportees out of Europe.
