Gambia’s Supreme Court says it will be May before it will be able to consider President Yayha Jammeh’s petition to review the legality of the election he lost on December 1.

A delegation of West African leaders will visit Banjul today in a second attempt to get Jammeh to step down and allow the election winner Adama Barrow to be inaugurated next week.

Gambian legal and human rights experts say challenging the outcome of last moth’s election doesn’t give President Yayha Jammeh a mandate to stay in power.

If he choses to contest the process, he should do so as a public figure with the new president in office.

The Supreme Court has been dormant for six months after several judges were sacked for commuting the death sentences of former military officers.
