]]> Four men have been found guilty of trying to assassinate Rwanda’s former army chief, Gen Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa, in Johannesburg four years ago. A Kagiso magistrate says certain elements in the Great lakes country were behind the plot although he had to acquit the alleged ringleader and the general’s former driver for lack of evidence. Magistrate Stanley Mkhari will pass sentence on September 10 on the two men who tried to murder Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa outside his home in Johannesburg. The general had sought exile in South Africa after falling out with former Rwandan President Paul Kagame. Rwanda has denied involvement in the shooting. Nyamwasa, who was in court, says he’s pleased the magistrate noted the conspiracy to kill him was politically motivated.

]]> The US has opened the largest gathering of African leaders in its capital by rapping them over the knuckles.

Secretary of State John Kerry urged the four dozen leaders at the US Africa summit to respect diversity and political differences.

He urged them not to alter their constitutions for their personal gain.

John Kerry didn’t name any of the leaders who have tampered with their constitutions to stay in power.

But Teodoro Obiang Nguema of Equatorial Guinea, Rwanda’s Paul Kagame, Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni, Cameroon’s Paul Biya and Angolan President Jose Eduardo dos Santos were all in the audience.

Outside the State Department a crowd of around 100 protesters, many African expatriates , demanded the United States not cosy up to African autocrats.

 

Vice President Joe Biden met African civil rights leaders and encouraged them to fight corruption.
