A government-backed militia in Libya claims responsibility for a strike by a jet aircraft on the country’s only airport in the capital Tripoli.

There are no reports of casualties and the runway and terminal at Mitiga airport are not damaged.

The pro-government militia says it sent a jet aircraft that fired two missiles at the airport.

Flights were diverted to an airport 200 kilometres east of Tripoli.

Mitiga airport serving the capital has been the source of persisitent fighting between government forces and the Islamist militant group Fajr Libya that controls the capital.

On Sunday the government forces seized control of the western Libyan town of Kekla after 40 days of clashes.

The fighing has raged in Libya for more than three years after the killing of dictator Muammar Gadaffi.
