The Abuja government’s reportedly stepped back from the brink of striking a deal with the abductors to rescue some of the victims.

Nigeria’s top military officer says they cannot move in to rescue the kidnapped schoolgirls because this risks leaving some of them dead.

Air Marshall Alex Badeh says they can’t kill the victims in the name of trying to get them back.

The BBC reports a deal to release some of the girls was close but was called off by the government.

The mostly Christian victims are believed to be held captive in the remote forest area close to Nigeria’s borders with Chad and Cameroon.

The US, Britain, France and China are assisting with personnel and equipment in efforts to free the girls.
