In his meeting today with Mozambique’s President Felipe Nyusi, Pope Francis is unlikely to address human rights concerns as directly as watchdog group Amnesty International would like .

He did not do this either Morocco or Egypt – two of his four previous African visit – that arguably have more deplorable human rights records than the Pope’s current hosts.

Amnesty International has asked the Pope to express concern about the prolonged detention of pretrial prisoners in Mozambique and the beating of journalists and human rights defenders.

It was Pope Benedict, the incumbent’s predecessor, who angered Egypt during his visit with the vehemence of his denunciation of attacks on Christians.

And in Morocco earlier this year, Pope Francis said nothing about that country’s protracted illegal occupation of the Western Sahara in defiance of the international community.

After their meeting in Washington last night, President Donald Trump has sent his Nigerian counterpart Muhammadu home with two stern warnings:

drop the trade barriers for US goods into the African giant and stop the persecution of Christians.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, who was President Donald Trump’s first sub-Saharan African guest at the White House, gave his host  an opportunity to lambast what he called weak and obsolete immigration laws —necessitating the building of a wall along the Mexican border.

But it was on protecting Christians in Nigeria that Trump was toughest.

“We are very concerned about the religious attacks including the burning of churches and killing of  Christians,” he said.

Trump says the US will invest in Nigeria if Buhari tears down trade barriers and creates a level playing field thereby allowing better access for American goods
