Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta’s cast his ballot in the re-run election  he’s bound to win.

He says most of his country is calm and peaceful as it goes to the polls, however police have fired live round into the air in efforts to control demonstrators in the opposition stronghold of Kisumu.

Security concern has led international observer missions to scale down their activities in Kenya’s re-run Presidential elections.

Instead of going from voting station to station, the observers will stay in the relatively safe centres guaging the  fairness of results transmission and availability of results forms.

In the Western city of Kisumu, fear of violence and intimidation caused only two of 400 polling station officials to turn up today.

One man’s been shot dead by police trying to control opponents of today’s re-run Presidential election in Kenya.

The fatality was in Kisumu, a stronghold of opposition leader Raila Odinga who’s boycotting the poll necessitated by the Supreme Court annulling the August election won by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Amnesty International’s calling on Kenyan police to show restraint in dealing with protestors against today’s re-run election.

The police have been engaged in running battles  with crowds that have blocked access to polling stations and frightened off electoral staff in the western city of Kisumu and the largely informal giant settlement  of Kibera in the capital Nairobi.

In government supporting areas, there has been voting but at a much lower rate than experienced in the August election.

The turnout after hours of voting in Kenya’s controversial re-run Presidential election has been much lower than in the August poll annulled by the Supreme Court.

In the opposition strongholds of Kibera in Nairobi and Kisumu in the west of the country, there have been clashes with police.

Although opposition leader Raila Odinga has withdrawn from today’s re-run election, his name still appears on the ballot paper.

So he could have some votes counted for him.

Even though he’s urged his supporters to boycott the exercise…

..which they have done.

Polling stations are shuttered in Kisumu and Kibera.

Some Odinga supporters have however taken to the streets protesting against what they are calling a rigged election.

Tens of thousands of extra police have been drafted in to  maintain law and orderaintIN
