A machete attack in the restive North Kivus area of the Democratic Republic of Congo has left 14 villagers dead and another nine wounded.

Locals in the area fight over the mining of coltan, a vital mineral in making cellphones.

A battalion of soldiers has been despatched to the village of Rubaya, north of the Kivus capital Goma after the weekend attack.

The rebel Mai Mai group, that finances its operations with the proceeds of coltan sales, operates lethally in the area.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Denis Mukwege, who was recognized for his work on rape victims in the Congo, also has a campaign urging electronics companies to ensure that they are not using blood minerals in the manufacture of their products.

The International Committee of the Red Cross has suspended burial of Ebola victims in the area of the the Democratic Republic of Congo where  volunteer health workers were attacked.

At least 106 people have died since July in the latest Congolese outbreak of this deadly haemorrhagic disease.

Persistent violence in  the Kivus area of the DRC, where the outbreak has occurred, and community resistance to preventive measures and treatment  are major obstacles to fighting Ebola.

The World Health Organization says there’s a very high risk of the disease spreading to other areas and across the DRC border into Uganda and Rwanda.

Three volunteers where injured when an ambulance taking Ebola victims for burial was attacked.

Locals charge the health workers with enriching themselves in treating Ebola victims.

The World Health Organisation’s expressed concern that the violence hamstringing efforts to contain the Ebola outbreak in the DRC could become the perfect storm.

Medical specialists are in lockdown after fighting in the Kivus at the weekend killed 18 people.

The Ebola outbreak in the DRC is the seventh most serious in medical history with 69 confirmed deaths.

WHO head of prevention and emergency response Peter Salama says the deadly haemorrhagic threatens to spread into neighbouring Uganda.

However his teams dispensing vaccinations tracking the spread of Ebola  and education the population about preventative measures is hunkered down against fighting between 134 armed groups in what has become one of the longest, bloodiest  and potentially most dangerous wars on the planet.
