The hijacker, who was wearing what appeared to be a suicide vest, is believed to be a veterinary professor from Alexandria university.

The hijacker has asked for asylum in Cyprus and has handed a letter to authorities for his ex-wife back in Egypt.

He had originally ordered the pilot to fly to Turkey but the plane was not carrying enough fuel for this

The Egypt Air flight had arrived from Saudi Arabia in Alexandria where the hijacker boarded.

He initially held some passengers and crew hostage.

He has released all but two crew members.

His estranged wife, who is Cypriot, is understood to be en route to Larnaca.
