]]> 27 people have been confirmed dead following a head on collision early this morning between a  bus and an oil tanker on the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway.

Road accidents kill around 3 000 people on Kenya road every year.

The bus and the tanker were traveling in opposite directions along Kenya’s busiest highway.

Kambu police chief Leonard Kimaiyo says its too early to say exactly what caused the accident.

Kenyan road deaths have increased in recent years despite a crackdown on drunk driving and tougher fines.

The country made world headlines earlier this month when a Nairobi court banned random breathalyzer tests on grounds that they undermined Kenyan’s constitutionally protected right to choose.

The  action was brought by a bar owner.
