President Cyril Ramaphosa’s calling on Madagascar’s regional partners to step in an help restore security and stability in the country torn by conflict.

He was speaking at the SADC double troika meeting in Luanda  that looked at troubleshoots among the 15-nation grouping.

Being roped in as regional mediator in Lesotho, while he was still deputy president, has clearly given President Cyril Ramaphosa an appetite for active good neighborliness.

Today he reported progress in the mountain kingdom to his SADC counterparts charged with regional political and security stability….

….adding that Madagascar, where two people died in protests at the weekend, could do with some of it.

“This calls from some timely intervention from the region,” he said

Ramaphosa says the situation on the island state cannot be allowed to slide back to the chaotic conditions it experienced after the 2009 coup.

Leaders of the Great Lakes region say fears of increased violence because of delayed in elections in Democratic Republic of Congo mean the UN peacekeeping force in that strife-torn country must be beefed up.

They say the troops must come from the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region and the Southern African Development Community.

Two days of talks in Luanda, at which South Africa’s Minister for International Relations and Cooperation Maite Nkoana Mashebane was present, ended with a statement that the goal is to strengthen the operations of the UN force MONUSCO in fighting the negative forces in the DRC.

11 countries participated in the talks.

MONUSCO currently has more than 20,000 troops in the DRC protecting civilians and disarming dozens of rebel and splinter groups after two decades of conflict in the east of the country.

Angola’s yellow fever outbreak, that the World Health Organisation fears poses a threat to the whole world, is putting a strain on vaccines against the disease.

Collapsed oil prices force Angola to spend less on health care and heavy rains have created an ideal breeding ground for the mosquito carrying the virus.

ends intro

Angola has been grappling with its worst yellow fever outbreak in three decades.

The big fear is it could spread to China, which has been free of the virus, if Chinese workers return home sick, and supply of the vaccine is already under pressure.

At least 250 yellow fever deaths and nearly 2,000 cases have been reported in Angola since December, but World Health Organisation officials believe the numbers are higher.

The epidemic’s taken hold in the densely populated capital of Angola.

Infections linked to Angola have already been seen in Kenya, Morocco, the Democratic Republic of Congo and China.
