]]> A ceasefire signed overnight ends two years of armed conflict in Mozambique.

It draws a line under the renewed insurgency of the opposition Renamo group that fought a 16 year civil war ending in 1992.

Renamo leader Afonsa Dhlakama, hiding in the Gorongosa mountains in central Mozambique, didn’t travel to Maputo to sign the ceasefire.

He mandated chief negotiator Saimon Macuiane to ink the agreement.

Renamo went back to the bush two years ago claiming it was being ignored in the political process.

It’s been attacking vehicles on the main north-south highway for past 18 months.

The agreement provides for the integration of Renamo forces into the state military.

Dhlakama will maintain his personal security guards numbering several hundred.

The ceasefire process will be overseen by an international force.
