]]> Burkina Faso’s political parties have agreed that the country’s political transition should last a year, followed by elections in November 2015.

But the crisis talks in Ouagadougou ended without a deal on who’ll head a transitional government.

The military has been in charge since President Blaise Compaore was forced to quit last week amid mass protests.

Three African leaders were in Ougadougou yesterday underlining the African Union decision to give the military two weeks to hand power to a civilian ruler or face sanctions.

Lt Col Isaac Zida – the interim leader backed by the army – promises to comply with the deadline.

Yesterday’s crisis talks in Ouagadougou were also attended by civil society groups and tribal chiefs.

They were mediated by Presidents John Mahama of Ghana, Senegal’s Macky Sall and Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria.

]]> An announcement’s expected today from President Barack Obama that the United States is sending 3 000 troops to Liberia to help fight the Ebola virus outbreak.

The American personnel will help train medical staff and supervise the building of new treatment centres.

There’s pressure on the international community, particularly the countries with financial and medical resources to spare to respond more muscularly to the Ebola outbreak that’s killed more than 2 600 people in West Africa.

Last night’s Ghana President John Dramani Mahama called for increased and quicker action slow the spread of the worst outbreak the world has seen.

Mahama slammed the restrictions imposed on infected, countries saying this undermined their economies and their ability to fight against the disease.

In Geneva today the international response to Ebola comes under the spotlight of United Nations officials.
