]]> One of the most wanted warlords in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surrendered to United Nations peacekeepers.

Ntabo Ntaberi Sheka has been implicated in numerous atrocities in eastern  DRC.

Congolese authorities have had an arrest warrant for the leader of the Mai Mai Sheka since January 2011.

Ntabo Ntaberi Sheka’s  wanted for crimes against humanity involving mass rape.

Since the warrant was issued, Human Rights Watch has documented further crimes. Government and UN officials have met with Sheka at least  three times, encouraging him to surrender but making no efforts to arrest him.

Authorities will have to protect him from former collaborators who will try to kill him in detention.

Human Rights Watch says his arrest brings hope for justice in the DRC.
