]]> The army generals who led a rebellion in Burundi have been arrested.
They admit the coup mounted against President Pierre Nkurunziza while he was attending a summit in Tanzania has failed.
Five of the mutineers died in the fighting following the rebellion.
Nkurunziza’s back in the country.
Major General Godefroid Niyambere is among the mutineers arrested. He told reporters as soldiers
approached that they had decided to surrender because their coup bid has failed. Most of the military support President Pierre Nkurunziza.
Niyambere says he hopes the plotters won’t be killed.
The president said yesterday he would forgive the soldiers who surrendered.
Bujumbura is quiet this morning with most residents staying indoors after a day of fighting between soldiers for and against Nkurunziza.

]]> Crowds have poured onto the streets in the Burundian capital Bujumbura after an army general went on radio to announce President Pierre Nkurunziza has been sacked.

South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation says it’s too early to describe the actions as a coup.

President Pierre Nkurunziza’s in Tanzania for a regional summit to discuss the crisis in Burundi.

 

Troops have surrounded the state broadcaster in Bujumbura.

Police have disappeared from the streets.

Major General Godefroid Niyomare’s announced that the military has taken over and sacked President Pierre Nkurunziza because it’s totally opposed to his bid to win an unconstitutional third term at elections next month.

Njurunziza’s spokesman insists the attempted coup hasn’t worked.

The president’s delegates to the summit he’s attending in Dar es Salaam were desperately trying to get information from home.
