]]> Desperately trying to find a secure, freer and more prosperous life in Europe, at least 40 Africans died at the weekend on the perilous crossing of the Mediterranean Sea.

People smugglers in North Africa are taking advantage of the improved weather and are preparing to launch dozens of boats towards Italy and Greece.

Save the Children Fund says the victims on Sunday come from Ghana, Gambia the Ivory Coast.

About a hundred people were rescued by a Maltese merchant ship and dropped off in Sicily.

Another hundred arrived on the Italian Island on a second vessel.

Most of the unseaworthy and overcrowded ships are coming from lawless Libya.

Nearly 2 000 people have died during the crossing from Africa to Europe this year.
