]]> European leaders have resolved at their emergency summit on people trafficking to triple funding for the search and rescue of migrants at risk of drowning in the Mediterranean.
It brings assistance efforts back into line with Italy’s Mare Nostrum operation scrapped late last year for cost reasons .

In addition to the 120 million euros the EU will be spending on sea rescue efforts, the grouping will also be destroying the vessels used by the people smugglers.
French President Francois Hollande’s undertaken to get the necessary mandate from the United Nations.
The emergency summit follows the deaths last weekend of as many as 800 Europe-bound migrants in one boat that sunk off Libya.
Amnesty International says it fears deaths on this scale will continue.
The human rights watchdog calls the EU’s latest response woefully inadequate and shameful.

]]> Italian coastguards have come under fire from people traffickers as they rescued more than 2 000 migrants off the Libyan coast.

The attackers were trying to recoup a boat that had been emptied by the rescuers.

Kalashnikov-wielding men in a speedboat from Libya, fired on the Italian coastguard taking more than 2 000 mostly young African men off a dozen boats.

Their operation brought in four coastguard ships, two tugboats, a navy vessel and a plane.

More than 300 people desperately trying to gain access to Italy drowned in stormy seas last week.

Three days ago, another 600 migrants were rescued about 80km off Libya.

Cost considerations have forced Italy to abandon its rescue operation and join an EU exercise concentrating more on border protection.
