]]> Facebook’s first satellite that was designed to improve internet connectivity in rural Africa was destroyed when a SpaceX rocket exploded during fueling at Cape Canaveral yesterday.

No one was injured in the event that Cape Canaveral authorities say posed no  public threat.

Facebook’s owner Mark Zuckerberg, currently on his first visit to Africa, has been speaking enthusiastically about the satellite and what it could do to bring rural areas up to speed with the internet age.

The satellite, believed to have cost $300 million can be seen crashing to ground after the exploding SpaceX rocket sent a mushroom cloud into the air.

SpaceX CEO, Pretoria-born  Elon Musk tweeted that the cause of the destruction of the Falcon rocket is still unknown.
