The army in the mountain kingdom it surrounds this morning seized control of
police headquarters in Maseru and jammed radio stations and phones.

Reports of coup come from coalition government member Thesele Masiribane.

It’s been impossible making telephone contact with people in the kingdom.

The military has been silent as has Lesotho official news agency.

Masiribane says the government of Prime Minister Tom Thabane’s government is still in
control.

He won’t comment on Thabane’s whereabouts but insists the premier is fine.

Maseribane   accuses the Lesotho Congress for Democracy) of involvement in the move to seize power.

The party denies this although it is on record threatening to form a new government

Maseribane says he fled hours earlier after being warned of an impending
coup.

Some gunfire was reported in Maseru before dawn.

Maseribane heads the Basotho National Party that’s a member of Lesotho’s ruling coalition

The military have not said why they took such muscular action early today. There have been no reports from the official news agency LENA

In mid June, protestors blockaded government buildings in Maseru.

The South African government then expressed fears of an impending coup in the mountain kingdom it envelopes.

South Africa made a brief and bloody military intervention in Lesotho after contentious elections in 1998.

There have been consitutional reforms in the kingdom and a peaceful elections.

A coalition government was formed after the 2012 poll won by the opposition.
