West African tourist chiefs have urged travellers not to boycott their region because of the Ebola crisis, insisting that the epidemic’s affecting only three countries in a vast continent.

The World Health Organisations named Botswana’s Dr. Matshidiso Rebecca Moeti as head of its Africa office.

Chief executive of West African tourism Ola Wright says Africa is not a country, it’s a continent, warning that fear over Ebola in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone was having a damaging impact on neighbouring countries.

The deadly virus has brought an abrupt and indefinite halt to international tourism in those three affected countries.

But tourism has hit even in east and southern Africa, thousands of kilometres away where no cases of Ebola have been reported .

Wright says the fear is more damaging than the actual problem.
