]]> After seven months in power, Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has slimmed down and reshuffled his Cabinet.

Half of his 20-person new executive are women.

The smaller Cabinet, with eight fewer posts, was no surprise.

Premier Abiy Ahmed has been promising to this for some time.

But appointing 10 women delighted those who have long maintained leadership knows no gender bounds.

The women occupy the most important security portfolios: Aisha Mohammed at Defence and the new Ministry of Peace headed by Muferiat Kamil.

The latter will be particularly powerful with control of police, intelligence services  and information.

Ahmed has made staggering reforms to Ethiopia’s authoritarian government: releasing thousands of political prisoners, making peace with neighboring Eritrea and opening the economy.
