]]> Civil aviation authorities are forming a task force to look at the safety of air routes following the shooting down of a Malaysian airliner over Ukraine earlier this month.

Routes between South Africa, Europe, Asia and the Middle East are among those being examined.

Meeting in Montreal this week, The International Civil Aviation Organization, the International Air Transport Association and global aviation organizations decided to form a high-level international task force of state and industry experts to look at airspace security issues.

For economic reasons, airlines like to take the shortest route between cities.

They have no power to force governments to give accurate information about the safety below them.

One of the examples cited was flights from South Africa to Europe passing over Libya and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
