This will enable authorities to seek the extradition of the Gupta brothers, the Indian businessmen alleged to be the architects of state capture during the Presidency of Jacob Zuma.

The  office  of Justice Minister Michael Masutha says the treaties on extradition and mutual legal assistance in criminal matters with the United Arab Emirates will enable the two countries to assist each other in the investigation and prosecution of crimes.

The Gupta brothers Ajay, Atul and Rajesh fled to the UAE city of Dubai earlier this year as criminal investigations into alleged corruption accelerated after their friend and ally, former president Jacob Zuma, lost his grip on power.

They have since been spotted in both Dubai and the country of their birth, India.

Multiple charges have been laid against members of the Gupta family.

The Guptas asked to cross examine witnesses who implicated them before the commission of inquiry into state capture headed by Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo.

He’s refused their request to do this outside South Africa because they fear arrest if they return.

Judge Selby Baqwa says Justice Minister Michael Masutha unfairly denied Clive Derby Lewis medical parole four months ago.

He cannot hand the matter back to the minister because two independent doctors say the plaintiff has less than two months to live.

Clive Derby-Lewis was sentenced to death for providing the gun that killed Chris Hani 22 years ago.

He escaped the hangman because capital punishment was abolished by the ANC government.

He’s served 21 years in jail.

He showed no remorse for his action and was not considered for pardon by the Truth and Reconcialiation Commission.

Lately he’s sought to apologise to Hani’s widow Limpho but she’s refused to see him.

She left the court yesterday declining to comment.

Police Union spokesman Richard Mamabolo says he’s really disappointed Derby-Lewis will be set free because he’s not shown remorse.

Trade union leader Zwelinzima Vavi says the decision will spark an angry backlash.

Julian Knight says it’s wrong in law to apply victim participation to the process.

Eugene de Kock was found guilty of more than 80 counts of murder, kidnapping and assault against dissidents in the final years of apartheid.

De Kock gave details of his crimes to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission set up by then President Nelson Mandela after South Africa’s first democratic election in 1994.

Prison authorities have given a positive report on de Kock, saying he shows remorse and has improved his skills in prison.

Justice Minister Michael Masutha’s declined the parole recommendation, saying the families of de Kock’s victims should be consulted.

He doesn’t know why this has not happened.

There will have to be a review of parole policy.

He says de Kock’s parole process can be fast tracked to allow a new application within a year.
