The Pan African Parliament expresses sadness and dismay at the attacks against foreigners in South Africa.

A statement signed by PAP President Roger Dang says condemns this in the strongest arms and says it  threatens to reverse all the recent gains made by Africa.

The Midrand-based continental legislature is confident South African authorities will guarantee the security of parliamentarians at their session next month.

It urges African leaders to reflect on real problems facing their ordinary citizens that could spiral into uncontrollable revolt.

The PAP statement says the violence and tension being experienced in South Africa is spreading into other parts of the continent leading to the displacement of helpless people and causing damage and loss of property and sources of livelihood and eventually loss of lives.

Failing to ratify legal instruments and to meet commitments is impacting on the credibility of Africa and undermining its ability to become the continent rising.

This message from African Union Commission head Mousaa Faki Mahmet opening the sixth session of the fourth Pan African Parliament in  Midrand.

Moussa Faki Mahmet began his speech recognizing the constraints under which Pan African Parliamentarians work.

Four years after their target day for gaining legislative power, the 255-member body is still only a talk shop.

Mahmet says Africa’s failed to ratify most of the legal instruments passed by the PAP.

This this causing legitimate doubts among development partners.

African leaders have  spoken about having a free trade area and a single Africa passport that would allow the free movement of people and good around the cntinent.

These remain a pipe dream as some of the decisions taken by leaders have yet to attack a single ratifying vote.

Regional transport stakeholders  are meeting in Midrand later this month to work on strategies including moving heavy freight off the over-burdened roads and get governments to spend more on maintaining and expanding  increasingly efficient railways.

Their meeting’s designed to formulate strategies to meet the challenges including depressed economies and create business opportunities for suppliers and other industry players.

Four of the previous meetings of the 20-year-old Southern African Railways Association have been in Midrand.

This year’s theme concentrates on effective supply chain logistics in moving freight from ports to customers.

SARA operations director Sam Mzileni says efficient transport networks enable the Americas, Europe and Asia to conclude well over double the trade with neighbours that Southern African nations manage to achieve.
