]]> On international World Wildlife Day, the group monitoring  the poaching of African elephants says it still remains unacceptable high overall.

The most serious threats are to elephant populations in Central and West Africa.

The MIKE program of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, says elephant poaching has  declined annually since its peak in  2011.

This decrease was maintained in 2016. and it notes improvements in parts of East Africa.

Nevertheless elephant populations are still in declaine.

Estimated poaching rates overall remain higher than the normal growth rate of elephant populations, or above the sustainability threshold.

Overall poaching levels in Southern Africa continue to remain below the threshold.

The program says African elephant populations continue to face an immediate threat to their survival from unacceptably high-levels of poaching for their ivory especially in Central and West Africa where high levels of poaching are still evident.
