A weapons depot’s exploded following clashes between militia and residents near the Libyan capital, killing at least 29 people.

The fighting started when armed  residents and forces from Misrata stormed the arsenal being held by the militia.

ends intro

It is not known exactly what caused the explosion in Garabulli.

Speculation is the militia inside realised they were trapped and took a suicide option.

Tripoli has only lately fallen under control of the internationally supported interim government.

In addition to the 29 people killed,  dozens were wounded in the explosion.

Further along the coastline, which has been completely blocked by military action, 34 members of pro-government forces have died  in the fight against the Islamic State group besieging the center of their stronghold of Sirte – birthplace of former dictator Muammar Gadaffi.

A huge blaze engulfing Libya’s biggest fuel storage facility in the capital, Tripoli, is spreading out of control.

Libya’s National Oil Company appealing for international assistance to try to contain the blaze.

Libya’s government’s blaming clashes between rival militias for starting the fire that’s spread to a second tank at the oil depot.

Authorities say it may cause a humanitarian and environmental disaster.

At least 97 people have been killed in fighting between rival militia groups battling for control of Tripoli’s main airport in the past week.

Firefighters almost managed to put out the blaze when it took hold of a first tank but had to withdraw after fighting resumed in the area.

Shrapnel hit the second fuel tank, igniting it, and the fuel compound is still being hit.

A renegade Libyan general’s led an attack on the country’s parliament and declared its working suspended.

The Libyan government insists it’s still in full control despite attacks on the legislature.

A militia group led by General Mohktar Farnana says General Khalifa Hifter headed the group that took Libya’s parliament.

Farnana says the legislature will operate on an emergency basis but he didn’t elaborate.

He says Hifter’s action isn’t a coup but fighting by the people’s choice.

Farnana says the group can’t allow the country to continue being used as an incubator for terrorism.

It’s not clear where Farnana, who stood before a Libyan flag, was speaking from.

He serves as commander of Libyan forces.

Hospital officials say one person died in the attacks in which 20 officials and MPs were abducted.
