Four men found guilty of trying to kill a Rwandan general exiled in South Africa have been jailed for eight years.

A Krugersdorp magistrate says the three Tanzanians and one Rwandan will be deported once they’ve served their sentences.
Magistrate Stanley Mkhari says the assassination bid on Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa four years ago was policially motivated.

Nyamwasa was shot outside his Johannesburg home months after he sought asylum in South Africa having fallen out with Rwandan president Paul Kagame.

Nyamwasa’s survived at least three attempts to kill him.

He maintains Kagame ordered the 1994 shooting down of the plane carrying Rwandan Hutu president Juvenal Habyarimana.

The president’s death sparked the genocide that killed at least 600 000 Tutsis in Rwanda.

Mkhari says South Africans are tired of the political killings of foreign nationals.
Another of Kagame’s opponents, former spy chief Patrick Karegeya, was killed in a Sandton Hotel in January this year.

Four men have been found guilty of trying to assassinate Rwanda’s former army chief, Gen Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa, in Johannesburg four years ago. A Kagiso magistrate says certain elements in the Great lakes country were behind the plot although he had to acquit the alleged ringleader and the general’s former driver for lack of evidence. Magistrate Stanley Mkhari will pass sentence on September 10 on the two men who tried to murder Faustin Kayumba Nyamwasa outside his home in Johannesburg. The general had sought exile in South Africa after falling out with former Rwandan President Paul Kagame. Rwanda has denied involvement in the shooting. Nyamwasa, who was in court, says he’s pleased the magistrate noted the conspiracy to kill him was politically motivated.
