The roll out of anti retrovirals in South Africa has led to it being the third healthiest country on the continent in terms of the authoritative Mo Ibrahim Index.

But South Africa’s slumped four places to number 14 on the personal safety rankings.

The foundation founded a dozen year back by Sudanese telecommunications billionaire Mo Ibrahim uses four tools in its quest to improve African leadership and governance.

Best know of these is probably the prize for a democratically elected leader who voluntarily steps down. That’s been awarded only three times in 12 years.

The annual index measures countries by rule of law, participation and human rights, sustainable economic opportunity and human development.

South Africa’placed fifth on the continent in the latest index.

That’s a marginal increase from its previous ranking.

Regionally, South Africa falls in behind Mauritius and Botswana.
