There are fears of violence gripping Lesotho’s elections at the end of this month.

The mountain kingdom’s military rejects government’s blame for Sunday’s shootout that killed a bystander and wounded two of the prime minister’s bodyguards.

Lesotho’s army says the bodyguards refused to stop and fired first at the checkpoint in the capital Maseru.

However a senior advisor to Prime Minister Tom Thabane says the soldiers had deliberately targetted the bodyguards who are soldiers themselves.

Government secretary Moahloli Mphaka says authorities are trying to gather all information.

There are growing fears there could be more violence ahead of elections that have been called for February 28 – two years ahead of time because of a failed coup at the end of August.
