Egyptian security forces have responded  quickly and muscularly to quell demonstrations calling for the fall of President Abdel Fattah El Sisi.

They used teargas to disperse protestors in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, site of the mass demonstrations eight years ago that forces President Hosni Mubarak from power.

Protests have become rare event since the military coup that ousted President Mohamed Moursi in 2013.

Yesterday’s demonstrations in various centers across Egypt were quickly broken up.

President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, the former military chief who took power after the coup, has cracked down on the media and opposition.

Hundreds of protestors were arrested yesterday and taken off in armoured military vehicles.

This is a tense time both for Sisi and the Egyptian people.

Egypt’s largely pro-government media has virtually ignored yesterday’s death of former President Mohamed Moursi.

Those publications that referred to Moursi collapsing any dying in court while facing espionage charges did not refer to the fact that he was Egypt’s first democratically elected president.

His politics of fear has kept the lid on things domestically.

But Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El Sisi is under growing pressure to reveal how Mohamed Moursi was treated in detention.

El Sisi’s had him jailed immediately after unseating him in a 2013 coup.

Tory MP Crispin Blunt, who heads Britain’s Independent Detention Review Panel, visited Moursi last year and warned that denying the man with chronic ailments  proper medical care was sentencing him to a premature death.

Egypt’s President Abdel Fatah El Sisi assumes the rotating presidency of the African Union at the summit of the 55-nation grouping in Addis Ababa today.

Continental leaders, including President Cyril Ramaphosa, will urge him to push administrative and financial reforms introduced by his predecessor Rawanda’s President Paul Kagame.

But the former Egyptian military leader’s expected to stress security and peacekeeping issues.

Five years ago the African Union suspended Egypt after Abdel Fatah El Sisi’s coup unseated Mohamed Moursi .

El Sisi’s elevation to the ceremonial leadership of the union marks his full rehabilitation.

He’s dealing with significant domestic security  challenges that are expected to colour the flavour of his AU presidency that will concentrate on dealing with migration and displaced persons from and within Africa.

It the first time the procedure has been done in front of the international  media.

Egypt’s unearthed more than a dozen ancient finds this year.

It’s determined to restore the flow of scientists and tourists to the country that suffered a visitor’s drought since the 2011 uprising that overthrew  President Hosni Mubarak and the military coup ousting  his elected successor Mohamed Moursi two years later.

The latest tombs found by a French-led expedition contained thousands of figurines and colour paintings.

They date back to the 17th and 18th dynasties – the time of Ramses II and Tutankamen – in the 13th century BC,

Amnesty International’s  Middle East and North Africa director Philip Luther says

human rights abuses have surged since the military overthrew Islamist president Mohamed Moursi in 2013 and unleashed a crackdown on Islamist and secular dissidents.

Children were among those being kept at undisclosed locations for up to several months at a time to intimidate opponents and wipe out peaceful dissent.

Amnesty’s report documents 17 cases, including five children, who’ve disappeared for periods of between several days to seven months.

The media network’s calling it part of a ruthless campaign against freedom of speech and expression, in order to muzzle the voice of the free press.

Ibrahim Helal, former director of news at Al Jazeera’s Arabic channel, and journalist Alaa Sablan, were sentenced along with President Mohamed Moursi for allegedly leaking state secrets to Qatar.

Al Jazeera denounces, condemns, and entirely rejects the verdict.

The network finds the sentence incriminating to the profession of journalism, which all international laws and legislation seek to protect, and to all journalists, who should be enabled to report with objectivity, professionalism, and integrity.

Acting Director General of Al Jazeera Dr Mostefa Souag says the sentence  is considered a failure for the justice and court system in Egypt; a country classified as one of the most dangerous places for journalists to work in.
