He says refusing to do this is an outrageous act of disrespect to the people of the small West African country.

United Nations regional envoy Mohammed Ibn Chambas says Yayha Jammeh will be strongly sanctioned if he tries to cling to power.

He was speaking after a regional demarche failed to budge the man who took power in the Gambia in a  coup 23 years ago.

The United Nations is concerned troops loyal to Jammeh could compromise critical sensitive electoral material from the election he lost on October 1.

Troops have  already seized the office in the capital Bajul of the country’s electoral commission.
