Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta pulled out the bells and whistles to wave off his country’s first shipment of crude oil.

At the ceremony in Mombasa, he warned of the possibility of corruption tainting Kenya’s black gold.

The crude oil, bound for Malaysia was transported by road to Mombassa from Turkana 850 kms away.

The shipment of 200 000 barrels is testing Kenya’s export capacity using the Chinese firm ChemChina.

By the time  Kenya goes into full production in 2014, there should be a pipeline from the oil field to the port.

Kenya will earn R1,3 billion from oil sales over the next two years.

President Uhuru Kenyatta says local communities will be the first to benefit from Kenya’s new wealth.

In the run-up to Kenya’s re-run election, political protests have been banned in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu.

Government cites demonstrators’ lawless for this sweeping measure.

Having withdrawn from the re-run presidential election, opposition leader  Raila Odinga calls for daily protests next week to keep up pressure on election officials.

Security Minister Fred Matiangi maintains there is a clear, present and imminent danger of a breach of the peace.

Police have been notified that for the time being, demonstrations won’t be allowed within the central business districts of Kenya’s three largest cities.

Hundreds of opposition supporters have marched in recent weeks, sometimes burning tyres and clashing with police who have used teargas to disperse crowds.

Kenya has a recent history of deadly political violence.
