]]> After weeks of wrangling by European leaders, Ursula von der Leyen, who made history becoming Germany’s first woman Defense Minister, has been nominated to lead the European Commission.

The ally of German Chancellor  Angela Merkel will be the first woman in that job.

Domestic politics caused Germany to abstain in the vote nominating Ursula von der Leyen to succeed European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

Her nomination still requires European parliamentary approval.

Belgian-born van der Leyen, whose family moved to Germany the  she was 13-years-old will be responsible for enforcing EU rules, proposing new laws and handling trade deals.

The British and German educated woman is the mother of seven children.

She strongly backs EU integration and closer military cooperation in the bloc.
