The rights watchdog’s calling for serious political reforms in the Great Lakes country

Rwanda’s electoral commission has barred three candidates from running in next month’s  presidential poll.

This means incumbent President Paul Kagame will face two opponents.

Amnesty International official Mothoni Wanyeki says the climate in which the elections takes place is the culmination of years go repression.

Many killings and disappearances, including some recent ones, have been blamed on the government of Kagame, who has been his country’s de facto leader or elected president since the end of the 1994 genocide.

His critics say he is an authoritarian who is intolerant of legitimate opposition.
