An Egyptian-born television journalist working for Al Jazeera is suing his employer for $100 million claiming the network’s negligence landed him in jail.

Mohamed Fahmy, who spent more than 400 days in a Cairo prison on charges of aiding a terrorist organisation, suggests Al Jazeera’s actions supporting the banned Muslim Brotherhood put him behind bars.

Mohamed Fahmy and two colleagues Baher Mohamed and Peter Greste were originally sentenced to seven to 10 years in prison on charges that included spreading lies to help a terrorist organization, a reference to the Muslim Brotherhood.

All three insist they were merely doing their jobs as journalists.

In January, a court ordered a retrial, citing procedural flaws.

Greste, an Australian, was freed and deported.

Fahmy is a naturalised Canadian who gave up his Egyptian citizenship. He has filed his suit in a Canadian court.
