Rawlings says Akufo Addo’s victory is a manifestation of the people’s desire for new leadership and comes with enormous responsibilities including a commitment to pursue an anti-corruption drive across-the-board.

In his response, Akufo-Addo says in pursuing corruption, he will be guided by due process.

There’e no room for acts of political vendetta or harassment.

Ghana re-established its reputation as one of Africa’s cleanest democracies when authorities proclaimed opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo, 72, a British-educated lawyer and veteran statesman, as the next president.

ends  intro

The victory by Nana Akufo-Addo’s centre New Patriotic party, after eight years of rule by the left-leaning National Democratic Congress, triggered wild celebrations across much of the country.

Akufo Addo thanked the incumbent  John Dramani Mahama for conceding defeat and for his  work for Ghana

His win follows the surprise electoral defeat last week of Gambia’s Yahya Jammeh, who had spent 23 years in office after seizing power in a coup.

The two results point to west Africa’s improving record for smooth democratic transitions after recent transfers of power in Nigeria, Cape Verde and Benin. However, Jammeh has  backtracked on his concession.

Hackers have targeted the website of Ghana’s electoral commission as votes are counted after tightly contested elections.

The commission says the website is up again after a four-hour outage. An attempt to put up fake results failed.

It urged people to ignore the bogus figures circulating on social media.

President John Mahama is facing a strong challenge from main opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo, who’s confidently claiming an outright win.

Wednesday’s election passed off peacefully, but voting was postponed to Thursday in one constituency after voting material failed to arrive on time.

A run-off will be held later in the month if neither of the two main candidates secures more than 50% of the votes.

The campaign was dominated by Ghana’s faltering economy.

In the previous election in 2012, Mahama defeated Akufo-Addo by less than 300 000 votes.
